Pizza and Compliments Can Motivate Your Employees
A study done by Dan Ariely proved that pizza can be a huge motivator for employees to get work done. Ariely wrote a book called Payoff: The Hidden Logic That Shapes Our Motivations and it went into exactly what the experiment entailed and what the outcome was.
The experiment was held at a semiconductor factory at Intel in Israel. At the beginning of the workweek, Ariely sent out a message to his workers that promised a different reward if you get everything done that day. One says that you will get a cash bonus; the second one says that your boss will give you a rare compliment, and the third says that you will get a voucher for free pizza.
A quarter of the workers got no message. These workers would serve as the control group.
The employees’ goal was to assemble a certain number of computer chips per day.
The outcome was as followed:
Pizza increased productivity by 6.7 percent over the control group
The rare compliment promise reward increased productivity by 6.6 percent over the control group
The cash bonus increased productivity by 4.9 percent as compared to the control group
The study proves that pizza is a great way to motivate your employees to work hard. This study shows that employees feel appreciated when employers acknowledge their hard work.
