Resolution #1: Be Healthy

I think everyone has been here; you vow to eat healthier and give up junk food, alcohol, and sugar but half way through December you buy a bag of chocolate and give up on yourself.  What The Health by Eunice Wong is a great read that motivates you to eat healthier.  Eunice Wong explores the industrial food and the Pharma industry.  Another great book to read for health is If Our Bodies Could Talk: A Guide to Operating the Human Body by James Hamblin.  He makes understanding the human body easy and enjoyable.  He goes into if you really need to be drinking eight glasses of water a day and why you should move that glutinous cake to the side.

 

Resolution #2: Spend less, save more

Read Broke Millennials: Stop Scraping by and Get Your Financial Life Together by Erin Lowry.  You just graduated college and thoughts of paying taxes, bills, and counting give you the chills? This book is an extremely valuable book on how to keep you financially healthy.  The Broke and Beautiful Life: Small Town Budget, Big City Dreams by Stefanie O’Connel is a fancier guide to managing your personal finances.  O’Connel shows young adults how to live a fulfilling life on a small budget,

Resolution #3: Be More Proactive

A Tree Grows in Brooklyn by Betty Smith is the ideal read if you’re starting 2014 feeling down.  The book follows Frances Nolan, beginning when she is 11 and ending at 17.  It shows that despite her family’s poverty she persists.

 

Resolution #4 Become more optimistic

Hope in the Dark: Untold Histories, Wild Possibilities by Rebecca Solnit is a book on how to find optimism when it seems like all hope is lost.  Rebecca Solnit says it’s possible to keep going with our “resolutions” regardless of the struggles we face.

 

Resolution #5 Meditate More

The Miracles of Mindfulness: An Introduction to the Practice of Meditation is a perfect book for people who want to mediate more but don’t know where to start.  Here you’ll learn mindfulness techniques that will get you too that place of calm.
