When you turn 26, it's a major milestone in your life. You are off your parents' health plan and it's time to get your own health insurance.

It's not actually as intimidating as it sounds. Here's what you need to do.

If you can, get insurance coverage from your job.

Talk to HR about when you can enroll and whether your coverage can start right after coverage from your parents' plan ends. This way, you'll avoid a gap where you're not covered.

If you don't have a job that offers benefits...

You have 60 days from when you lose coverage on your parents' plan to purchase your own new individual health insurance policy.
