How to celebrate World Oceans Day in NJ

The Jersey Shore is an incredible tourist attraction because of its beautiful beaches and boardwalks. In order to keep our beaches clean and water safe, we all need to practice recycling and cleaning up our waste.

Oceans cover 71% of Earth’s surface, and they hold 97% of our planet’s water.
The oceans help feed us and provide most of the oxygen that we breathe.

Oceans also play a key role in regulating the weather and climate. Water evaporating from the oceans falls inland as rain, which we then use to drink and grow crops.

A variety of life saving medicinal compounds including anti-inflammatory and anti-cancer drugs has been discovered in the oceans.

You can take action and stop using plastic bags, bottles and straw. Advocates say plastic trash is a serious problem for our ocean, and especially all the animals that call it home, but together we can be part of the solution.

Go to the nearest beach with a group of friends and pick up the waste on the beach. It is insane how much trash you will find on the beach. Not only does it affect your beach experience, but it will also end up in the ocean and into a fish’s mouth.

Be conscious about which fish is relatively abundant (okay to eat) and which species are overfished (need to avoid). Also lookout for seafood that contains levels of mercury or PCBs that pose a health risk.
