In 2016, Guardian reported that humans in the US throw away half of our produce in the trash.  How much does that amount to? An astonishing $160 billion dollars! A survey reported that 77% of Americans feel guilty about food waste, so why is there so much food being wasted?

Researchers are puzzled as to why we waste so much food. They do think that it has to do with food prices. Americans spend more money on take out than most countries.

A report on food prices and spending from the USDA found that Americans spend 36.3 cents of every dollar on food services, 15.2 cents to food processors, and 12.4 cents to food retailers, which amounts to an average of $3,008 per year spent on dining out, says the Bureau of Labor Statistics.

What is the solution to
food waste? Eat your leftovers!

Leftovers are a great way to save money if you remember to eat them, or even remember to put them away. Amy Shapiro, MS, RD, and CDN and owner of Real Nutrition NYC, says one of the biggest mistake she sees people make with their leftovers is leaving them out for too long. “Leave leftovers out for no more than two hours at room temperature. Otherwise, bacteria grows, which is one of the biggest causes of foodborne Illness,” she warns.

Here are ways to
safely eat and reheat your leftovers:

-Repackage and date your leftovers
-Be mindful of the temperature needed for storing leftovers
When in doubt, throw it out
