Working out in the summer heat can be brutal. Staying motivated in the heat is almost exhausting just thinking about it. Follow these tips to stay cool during your workout in the summer.

Adjust your body temperature before your workout.

Some experts say that taking a quick, cold shower before your workout in the heat can improve your workout. If that doesn’t seem like something you’re into, try putting a cool cloth on the back of your neck before a workout in the heat.

Re think your running route.

If your normal running route is mostly in the sun, think about other routes to take that will keep you from roasting in the sun the whole time.

Keep tabs of your heart rate.

Wear a heart rate monitor to check that you are not over working your body in the sun. Over working your body in the heat can lead to heat exhaustion and heat stroke.

An easy way to ensure that you are not over doing it is reciting the pledge of allegiance to yourself. You'll know you're exercising hard enough when you have to take a quick breath every three to six words.

Run on dirt

Running on dirt or gravel paths is way easier on your body than running on asphalt or concrete. For one, asphalt and concrete radiate and reflect heat, making your runs way more exhausting and hot. Secondly, asphalt and concrete are harder on the knees than running on dirt.

Protect your head

Wear a cap when you run. Your head absorbs heat when you are outdoors. Not only does wearing a hat help keep you cooler, it also protects your head and face from sunburn.

Refuel with fruit

Most fruits are made up of water. Replenishing your body with water dense fruits like grapes, watermelon, cantaloupe, and honeydew are tasty ways to hydrate your body after a workout.
