July is Sarcoma awareness month.

Sarcoma is often known as the forgotten cancer. Sarcoma is a rare type of cancer that occurs in connecting tissues.  The tumors that grow are most common in the bones, muscles tendons, cartilage, nerves, fat, and blood vessels.  They can be found in your arms, legs, and other areas of the body as well.

Soft tissue sarcoma is often hard to find, because they grow anywhere in the body.  The first symptom is often a painless lump.  When the lump starts to grow it can press up against nerves or muscles and cause discomfort.

Osteosarcoma can show obvious early symptoms, including:

Pain off and on in the affected bone, which may be worse at night
Swelling, which often starts weeks after the pain
A limp, if the sarcoma is in your leg

To prevent and diagnose sarcoma, you should be visiting your doctor for yearly checkups.  To test for sarcoma your doctor will:

A sample of cells from the tumor, called a biopsy
Imaging tests, such as a CT scan, an ultrasound, or an MRI, to help see inside your body
A bone scan, if you might have osteosarcoma

July is a month to raise awareness for sarcoma patients and the difficulties they face and the need for more sarcoma research and better sarcoma therapies.
