In the near future, there will be an ambulance that comes to your door if you are having a stroke.  The University of California, Los Angeles and the Los Angeles County Fire Department are joining forces to conduct a study to test the economical and outcomes of faster treatment.

The Mobile Stroke Unit has everything to treat a stroke including: a neurologist, nurse, CT technician, and a paramedic.  There is even a high-resolution camera on board for doctors to conference in an view the patient.

What is beautiful about The Mobile Stroke Unit is how effective it is in treating stroke victims.  Paramedics put the patient in the unit, just as they would if they were to load a patient into an ambulance.  The nurse and technicians on board determine what type of stroke the patient is having and administer treatment from there.

The MSU can be very beneficial to patients living in city areas where the time to get to the patient can be longer.  This is also true for patients living in small towns, where the nearest hospital can be a half hour away.

These units can cost anywhere between $500,000 and $1,000,000.  There are also staffing cost for nurses, technicians, and paramedics.

The study is still being done, but if it is proven to be a beneficial way to treat patients having a stroke, we may be seeing a lot more of these in the future.
