May is Lyme Disease Awareness Month.

Lyme disease is an illness caused by the bacteria Borrelia burgdorferi, a complex microbe known as a spirochete. Lyme disease is a multi-staged, multi-systemic illness. Presentations vary by stage: acute (early stage) and chronic (late stage or persisting) illness.

Lyme's disease is one of the fastest growing infectious diseases in the United States and Western Europe. If untreated, it can become a severely debilitating illness affecting multiple organs, including joints, heart, brain and other parts of the central nervous system.

Some facts you may not have known about lyme's disease:

-There are 329,000 people diagnosed in the U.S. each year.

-Only 1 in 10 cases are officially reported because criteria and testing accuracy vary greatly.

-95% of confirmed cases were reported from 14 states and the District of Columbia. While Lyme is most prevalent in the Northeast and upper Midwest, it has been reported in all 50 states and 80 countries.

-25X The number of cases reported annually has increased nearly 25-fold since national surveillance began in 1982.

There are ways to prevent Lyme disease.  Taking safety precautions can save you from experiencing intolerable pain that comes with lyme's disease:

1. Avoid tick habitats

2. Dress defensively

3. Use repellent on exposed skin

4. Check for ticks
