The opioid crisis continues to worsen throughout America.  Surprisingly enough,  in 11 states, the top prescriptions are opioid pain pills that are mixtures of acetaminophen and hydrocodone (brand names Vicodin and Norco), according to new data from GoodRx, an online prescription cost service.

GoodRx looked into the top 10 drugs in each state from February 2017 to February 2018.  Their goal in doing this is to bring awareness of drug prescriptions to consumers. Synthroid came at the number one prescribed drug in more than half of the states.  It is used to treat hypothyroidism. More than fifteen percent of older adults are prescribed this drug.

Vicodin and Norco remain popular in the South; however, Suboxone is even more popular, especially in Tennessee.  Suboxone is used to treat opioid addiction.   Drugs for high blood pressure and cholesterol are always widely prescribed.

Some pharmacists believe that this data may be misleading.  It looks at individual drug products instead of larger classes of drugs used to treat a given medical issue.  According to IQVIA, a company that looks at health data, if you look at similar types of drugs that are grouped together, the most common prescriptions are for drugs to treat high blood pressure, pain and mental health issues.
