Realistic Tips to Quit Smoking

Research shows that people who
quit smoking abruptly are more successful than those who gradually smoke less. While there's no one-size-fits-all approach to kicking the habit, former smokers and experts believe these tactics offer the best chance of success:

1. Practice mindfulness

Studies suggest that practicing mindfulness reduces smoking at a greater rate than the typical smoking cessation program. "We think of mindfulness as opening up the space to respond rather than habitually react,” says Judson Brewer, MD, a psychiatrist, addiction expert and director of research at the Center for Mindfulness at the University of Massachusetts Medical School.

Really paying attention to what if feels like to smoke. Does it make you feel good? Acknowledge what you are actually inhaling. Acknowledge the taste.

2. Use mobile apps that are there for you 24/7

A mobile app removes the barrier of going to a professional’s office and is close at hand in those moments when quitters are experiencing cravings. "Online communities have been shown to increase quit-rate like 3- to 5-fold," adds Brewer, who developed the app Craving to Quit. Apps can give you the guidance whenever you are feeling a craving. Some apps that can help you quit smoking for good are: Craving to Quit, QuitGuide, and Headspace. All give different approached to quitting while maintaining the same common end goal.

3. Ask advice from someone who has been in your situation

When someone tells you to quit smoking, you most likely will role your eyes. The ones who tell you to quit smoking may not have experience the process of actually quitting. Reach out so someone who has gone through the experience. Why?

-Relatable: You will find inspiration when connecting with a former smoker. They have been there. They can share with you inside tips to help you achieve the same goal.

-Honesty: An anti-smoking campaign launched several years ago by the Centers for Disease Control communicated the health effects of smoking through former smokers. In its first year, the campaign motivated 1.6 million Americans to try quitting. Smokers said that they needed to see and hear what it would be like to live with the negative consequences of their habit.

-No Judgement: Quitting cold turkey can seem almost impossible. Slipping up is natural. Sharing this with someone who has gone through it will lift the anxiety from you.
