A study done by Dr. Ian Lipkin and his colleagues at Columbia University Mailman School of Public Health took a year to collect mice throughout New York City and looked at whether they carry diseases. They tested up to 416 mice from seven different sites.

One of their analysis found that mice to carry viruses but none of the viruses were connected to human disease. Another study proved that mice carry bacteria that are linked to sickness in humans. Some of the bacteria found were: E. coli, shigella, salmonella, and Clostridium Difficile.

An astonishing realization came when the bacteria they found showed signs that they could be resistant to treatment by antibiotics.
Lipkin did not link mice to any huge outbreaks of human disease. But, people should
take precautions to protect themselves. Lipkin recommends covering any holes in the house that mice can scurry through. Make sure to wash your hands and NEVER eat food that could have possible come in contact with any mouse droppings.
