This year has been a chaotic one in health care to say the least.  Here is a recap on the major issues that were talked about in 2017.

Affordable Care Act:  The most talked about topic of health insurance in 2017.  During his campaign trail, then-presidential candidate Donald trump said that repealing and replacing the ACA would be one of his first acts if elected.  Many supporters were in favor of this move since they believed health insurance was taking money out of their pockets.

Opioid EpidemicOpioids have been talked about a lot this year. Deaths from opioids increased by 33,000 in 2015 to more than 42,200 in 2016, and experts say that the problem, if not tackled, will only get worse. The president recognized its destructiveness and declared it a public health emergency in October.

Abortion Access:   Abortion remains the most controversial topic of all time.  Pro-life and pro-choice activists have written many op-eds campaigning for their sides of the issue.

Medical Marijuana:  Medical marijuana is believed to be beneficial to stopping the opioid epidemic. In a January op-ed, Paul Armentano, deputy director of the National Organization for the Reform of Marijuana Laws wrote: “The available evidence shows that legal cannabis access is associated with reduced levels of opioid abuse and mortality, as well as declines in the use of other addictive substances.”
