Study find thats head injuries can lead to developing dementia

People who have suffered a traumatic brain injury have a significantly higher risk of dementia, including Alzheimer's disease, than people who have no history of injury.

The Lancet Psychiatry just published a study on patients who had a history of brain injuries and their risk of getting dementia. The study found that patients who suffered brain injuries had a twenty four percent higher risk of getting dementia than those who did not.

The study followed records of up to 2.8 million patients.

A traumatic brain injury is defined as,” a disruption in the normal function of the brain that can be caused by a bump, blow or jolt to the head, or penetrating head injury,” according to the The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

Researchers found that someone who experienced one single severe brain injury was at risk of getting dementia by 35%. A mild head injury increased a patient’s risk of dementia by 17%.

When someone suffered two or more brain injuries, a patient’s risk of dementia was even higher:
-People who suffered two or more traumatic brain injuries had a 33 percent increased chance
-People who had suffered four or more had a 61 percent increased chance
-People who suffered five or more had a 183 percent increased chance.

Dementia is a debilitating disease. To ensure that your chances of receiving dementia are low, protect your head from potential head injuries. When riding a bike, wear a helmet. If you play a high impact sport, wear a strong sports helmet. Doing anything that involves the possibility of a head injury, keep your head protected.
